WHAT TO EXPECT AT UNITY

Here are some things about our church that you will notice and experience:

BIBLICAL TEACHING

Lots of attention is given to the preaching, teaching, sermons and other means that God uses to speak to us. Sermons usually last about 30-45 minutes, and will always have a strong Biblical foundation while also making practical connections to daily life.

EXPRESSIVE WORSHIP

Music is big at Unity Church of Jesus Christ -- we started as a nondenominational gospel choir at Penn State almost 40 years ago, and praise remains at the roots of just about everything we do. Singing isn't mandatory to be a part of the church, but we want you to feel free to jump right in and give it a try, no matter how good or bad you might think you are. You will hear a wide variety of Christian music ranging from traditional to contemporary worship, that is expressed in a variety of music styles. All of our music is meant to lead everyone in attendance into an authentic experience with God. Some scriptural references for expressions of worship are:

  • Lifting hands – Psalms 134:2

  • Clapping hands Psalms 47:1

  • Singing in the Spirit – I Corinthians 14:14-15

  • Dancing – 2 Samuel 6:14, Psalms 150:4

  • Musical Instruments – Psalms 150:3-5

FREEDOM & FERVOR

We have an intentional and heartfelt passion in seeking God. In concert with this fervor, freedom is central to a Unity service. God is free to revise our order of service as He pleases, and you are encouraged to stretch yourself in following the leading of the Holy Spirit in expressing and walking out your relationship. This can and does lead to unpredictable and unexpected moments, because you are encouraged to "work out your salvation with fear and trembling, knowing that it is God that worketh in us, both to will and to do, of His own good pleasure." (Philippians 2:4)

GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT

This can be somewhat controversial, but not too confrontational. If an attribute is mentioned in the Bible -- prophecy, speaking in tongues, dancing in the Spirit -- we're open to seeing it walked out within our body. Don't feel that you have to embrace anything that you are uncomfortable with, and feel free to approach an elder or pastor if you have any question about what you see.

COMMUNITY

We value personal relationships and the power of being a part of a community of believers. Our love for one another grows as we do life together, serve together and grow together. You will find the the atmosphere here is warm, welcoming and one that fosters meaningful connection with others.
