Rationale for Survey
It is no wonder that there is trouble in the United States; according to the Gallup polls, 80% of the American population claims to be Christian, but there is a wide variety of people’s understanding of Christianity and the Bible. Young adults are not immune to this gap. In addition, he 2006 Barna Group study showed that 61% of all young adults who attend church during their teenage years either disengage from or totally walk away from their Christian faith during their college years or by their mid to late twenties. That is 6 out of every 10 young adults. Many of these young people never return, and those that do, often do not fully accept the Christian faith and values as absolute truths. Based upon the New Beginnings Leadership Center’s initial observations, this is because there is often a gap between a person who just has knowledge of the Bible versus a person who is daily being led by the Holy Spirit and has the ability to apply the Bible into their every day life and decisions. This trend of losing our young adults and the gap between knowledge and application is significantly impacting the leadership and moral values of our nations and could have serious repercussions. Therefore, it is time to do a thorough study on young adult Christian leaders and the concept of Holy Spirit-led Christian Leadership.
On behalf of the New Beginnings Leadership Center, I am devising recommendations for a curriculum on Holy Spirit-led Christian Leadership for emerging spiritual Christian leaders (part of the solution towards narrowing the knowledge and application gap). However, I need evidence on the following:
- How large is the knowledge and application gap?
- What are the pervading values, beliefs, and definitions this generation validates?
- What roles do they currently play in leadership?
- What type of training do they have and need to enhance their understanding of Holy Spirit-led Leadership (as defined by the New Beginnings Leadership Center)?
The survey will address these underlying questions and allow me to produce a more thorough analysis.
